Stone State Park was originally inhabited by Native Americans, but in 1885 Daniel Hector Talbot begin purchasing land that would eventually be used by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the construction of the park. Today, the park offers many miles of equestrian, hiking, and bike trails, and is also the home of the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center. The park is located in the northeast area of the city, near the South Dakota border.
